The Captain Howdy

tattoo

Following on from my previous post on Shimmy Disc I’ve already managed to track down one CD from the lost collection. ‘Tattoo of Blood’ came out in 1996. The band were made up of Kramer (label head honcho and one time member of Bongwater) and Penn Jillette (from Penn & Teller the illusionists) taking vocal duties. The LP does play a little like a Bongwater LP – with Penn coming over a little like Ann Magnuson at times. The LP has aged fairly well and overall it’s a decent listen but towards the end of the LP – the title song kicks in and it’s just a wonderful song. It’s so good I just had to share it. It’s co written by Lou Reed apparently and features Debbie Harry, too.

Shimmy Disc on Spotify

shimmydiscAfter talk over on the Talent is a Vampire forum I was inspired to hunt down a few releases on the seminal US label Shimmy Disc over on Spotify.   A fair few releases I was interested in adding were not there – but a fair few that I’ve not heard in many years were.   So here is my first Spotify playlist -  The Shimmy Disc Special featuring songs by Bongwater, The Captain Howdy, Glen or Glenda, The Mabuses, Sharky’s Machine, King Missile, Trains and Boats and Planes, Spongehead, Brainville, Tuli Kupferberg, Kramer, Schockabilly, Walkingseeds, GWAR, Milksop Holly, No Safety and George Cartwright.

I am no expert on Shimmy Disc – but I did own a fair few of their records in the 1990′s.  Some remain, others were sold in a fit of financial desperation in the mid/late 1990′s.  A decision I still regret to this day.  I guess I have a new project, finding the missing ShimmyDisc records from my collection.
